The Sock-Castoff Fire Ceremony:
Weather permitting, the Maine Hunter Sailing Association will continue a very important tradition at the Summer Sailstice. On Sunday evening, providing the weather gods cooperate (and the town issues a fire permit), there will be a fire ceremony whereby all Captains, Admirals, First Mates and other able-bodied sailors will come forward to cast off a pair (or half pair) of worn out winter socks into the fire to mark the official end of all vestiges of winter and to raise an incense (so to speak) to the fog Gods, chasing them from all rhumb lines that Maine Hunter Sailing Association boats may find themselves on this summer. A sea shanty may possibly accompany this event as well. Please come prepared (whatever that means).
Bruce Foshay will be leading us in the "Burning of the Socks" offering to the gods and goddesses of the seas.....or whatever it is!
